About Pilates

JOSEPH PILATES 1883-1967

Joseph Pilates used his own method to treat wounded and sick soldiers in World War 1. The success of his innovative treatments won him fame. He made up his own equipment from anything he could find like tractor tyre tubing and bed springs. He developed ways to keep the body moving if a patient was bed bound and ways to rehabilitate all sorts of ailments from loss of limbs to serious pneumonia. Pilates called his method at the time Contrology but it has since become known simply as Pilates. This method is now used all over the world and is an incredibly successful way of functionally training people. It educates people in body awareness in how they move, sit, stand etc. The method emphasizes moving with flowing control and only using what effort is required for the movement and nothing more. People from all levels say they have improved range of motion, flexibility, posture and strength, after Pilates and also a decreased level of pain in injured areas. Pilates sessions are designed to give you a better body, from the inside out.

WHO CAN DO PILATES?

Just about anyone can do Pilates. The custom-designed workouts are safe, versatile and effective for all ages and fitness levels. If you can’t get to us we can come to you. The Pilates method is used to rehabilitate the injured so it is incredibly versatile and can be done in a very small space if necessary. Pilates can be used for all kinds of things. It can help to rehabilitate a protruded disc in a persons spine, it can help get mobility back into areas that have locked up and can even help people overcome balance issues. Our oldest client is in her 90’s and she attributes her agility and strength to two Pilates sessions a week for the last twenty years. If you have medical conditions like low blood pressure, reflux and asthma we can design the program to suit your requirements. If you are pregnant or are thinking of becoming a mum soon Pilates is a wonderful healthy exercise program you can do right through the pregnancy and after the baby is born. If your pelvic floor, back muscles and abdominals are strong you will have a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery. Whatever your condition, we can design a program suitable for you.
